A fire of unknown origin near Webster Park is in mop-up stages after
crews worked through the afternoon and into the night Tuesday.
The Goat Park fire started at 1 p.m. Tuesday southwest of the Royal
Gorge area off of CR 3.
Crews from Cañon City Area Fire Protection District, Bureau of Land
Management, Fremont County Sheriff’s wildland team, Tallahassee Fire,
Deer Mountain Fire Protection District, Department of Corrections
wildland crews and American Medical Response responded to the scene to
fight the fire.
“The fire spread quickly because of the dry conditions and the steep
terrain,” Lt. Shane Roberts said. “BLM called in a seat plane from Fort
Carson” to make the slurry drops. In addition, a helicopter also made
slurry drops on the fire.
However, the efforts were halted Tuesday “when a severe storm came
through,” Roberts said.
According to Jim Hall, spokesman for the National Weather Service,
the storm was not only a threat to the firefighters but also the plane
and helicopter.
“The storm hit so quickly that they only had a 10- to 15-minute
window to get the crews out,” Hall said.
According to reports, rain and 1-inch hail fell in the area between 3
and 5 p.m.
“At 4:40, 3/4-inch hail was reported east of Florence,” Hall said.
“As soon as the storm passed, all crews were back on the line and
stayed there until about 10 p.m.,” Roberts said.
The firefighters built a rough line around the fire to contain it
then left the area overnight because the “fire had laid down” with the
cooler temperatures and rise in humidity.
Reports determined the fire measured about 10.3 acres.
“The crews started mopping up the fire today,” Roberts said.
No injuries or structure damages were reported, according to a press
release.
The cause for the Goat Park fire has not been determined, reports
said.
In addition, crews are checking on a fire on Tanner Peak, which was
reported this morning.
“We don’t know if it’s smoke or fire,” said Ken Smith, BLM fire
information officer. “We’re going to check it out this morning.”
